My Disability

I have X-Linked Juvenile Retinoschisis. This decreases my eye sight significantly in close work. I have a difficult time seeing small printed matter (such as a newspaper). I also have difficulties seeing faces until close. I had to quit driving in 2003. I have 20/400 vision in my left eye and about 20/80 vision in my right eye. I had fairly normal vision in my right eye (near sighted which glasses helped correct) until about 1998 (when I was age 42).

The previous link is a resource page with a good definition by the University of Michigan. There page describes the disease very well and has a "tutorial" about the disease. An individual named Jon Diercks has a wonderful page as well, including information about research, several links describing the disease, and lots of support information (a discussion e-mail list, a link to resources for people with impaired eyesight, and information about magnifiers). The latter page might move (as it´s an individual - I did lose him once), so let me know if the link is bad.

I´m always willing to talk to people (mostly mothers call me) about what to expect, but I am happy to report that in my case (as in Jon Diercks´ case), I am able to lead a productive happy life, with only a few problems (such as driving), so don´t despair.

So what? Well, if I don´t notice you at first,  just say "hi" an yway.    I´m not being unfriendly, I probably just can´t see you well enough to recognize you.
