Persona-based Conceptual Design and IxD Exercise

Root concept: Identifying a liberal studies course

Persona and (pre-pandemic) Scenario

Samantha is a first-year cybersecurity major. She lives in Oak Park and commutes to her courses, mostly in the Loop Campus but sometimes in Lincoln Park. She sometimes has family obligations, which include meeting her 9 year-old brother after school at 3:15 and taking him home. She enjoys movies and hanging out with her friends from high school.

Scenario: Samantha has already selected three courses for her schedule next term. These courses include a computer science course (major requirement), a focal point course and a writing composition course. She now would like to select a liberal studies course that counts towards her graduation requirements. She already has a course credit for Understanding the Past (UP) and Social, Cultural, and Behavorial Inquiry (SCBI). So, she would like to find a course that fulfills another category, particularly Arts and Literature (AL) or Philosophical Inquiry (PI). She's wondering if there's a course on Elizabethan literature.

Conceptual Design: Samantha uses an online app to search for a fourth class. When searching, the app can consider the constraints for the courses in which she is currently enrolled. She is able to indicate preferences for courses that address particular liberal studies requirements. After indicating the AL option, she can review courses offered in the next term that fulfill the AL requirement and work with her schedule.

Elicited Requirements

  • List courses that are available in the upcoming term
  • Respond to constraints and preferences on schedule, domain and topic of the course

Discussion questions

What requirements are missing? Can you infer any from the persona or scenario?

Exercise

  1. Write a flow chart of a solution that addresses the requirements
  2. Produce a wireframe that addresses the requirements
