UCD Goals: Measuring for Success

Preece, Rogers and Sharp (former HCI 440 text) provide one of the more comprehensive lists for defining usability (p. 14):

  1. Effectiveness (very general concept, too vague)
  2. Efficiency (alt term: ease of use)
  3. Safety
  4. Utility (alt term: usefulness)
  5. Learnability (alt term: ease of learning)
  6. Memorability

Rubin (1994) four dimensions for evaluating usability (pp. 18-19)

  1. Usefulness
  2. Effectiveness (ease of use)
  3. Learnability
  4. Attitude (likeability)

Rubin and Chisnell (2008, 2nd edition) (pp. 4 - 6):

  1. Usefulness
  2. Efficiency
  3. Effectiveness
  4. Learnability
  5. Satisfaction
  6. Accessibility

Hartson and Pyla (section 1.1, first edition)

  1. Usability (includes much of the above lists)
  2. Usefulness
  3. Functionality (behind-the-interface system functionality)
  4. Emotional Impact

Hartson and Pyla (section 1.4, second edition)

  1. Usability (includes much of the above lists)
  2. Usefulness
  3. Emotional Impact
  4. Meaningfulness

My list

  1. Utility (provides needed functions)
  2. Learnability (can figure out what to do to complete task)
  3. Efficiency (task completion time)
  4. Effectiveness (produces quality result)
  5. User Satisfaction (do the users have a positive experience?)
  6. Accessibility (supports diverse users)

Discussion questions

  • Are any goals missing for user experience?
  • Which goals do we address in this class?
  • Can satisfaction include meaningfulness? Or is meaningfulness more than that?
