Project Activities and Example

Every capstone project should have an activity that involves students in the class. We will schedule the activities throughout the quarter.

By the end of the quarter, you should participate in at least 8 project activities (5 points per activity; 40 points maximum). Participation is documented by reporting your experience with a D2L post.

Below is an example activity from a previous class (you are not expected to do it). You may want to use this example as a guide for your project activity. Keep in mind that the main goal of the project activity is to engage other students in the class and obtain some substantive feedback for your project.

Vincent de Paul Quotes Site

This quotes site is a resource for Vincentian scholars and university personnel. University personnel may use the site to find appropriate quotes for various publications on brochures, press releases, mission statements, etc. In short, the site should provide its users a means for finding appropriate quotes for a variety of occasions.

Activity Objective

The web site has a related quotes feature, where many quotes provide a list of quotes with similar words. These related quotes was determined through an algorithm that produces similarity scores based on the words in the quotes (ask me if you want more details). An open question is how well this feature provides a useful resource for finding related quotes. This activity provides one process for answering the question.

Activity Instructions

  1. Go to the VDP Quotes site
  2. Identify one, two or three "source" quotes (perhaps of interest to you) that have "Quotes with related words."
  3. Identify 10 randomly selected quotes that are not explicitly listed as related to your chosen quotes.
  4. For each of your selected source quotes, compare the listed related quotes to your random list. If the similarity feature is effective, the related quotes should be more related to the source quote than the quotes in the random list. You may want to develop a rating scheme so that you can quantify your comparisons.
  5. Summarize your process and results. Post it on the D2L discussion forum.
