Capstone Project

The capstone course requires a quarter-long project that draws upon principles and methods acquired in the core HCI courses. It usually involves the design of an interactive application, preferably for actual real-world use. The applied project should produce a professional-quality product and follow the user-centered design process. Its activities include formulating the root concept, user research, design phases and evaluation.

All projects should have the following:

  • Multiple methods for designing or evaluating the interactive materials.
  • New or adapted methods appropriate for the project.
  • Evaluation based on collected data for revising the design.
  • One class activity that involves others in the class.
  • A final report that includes a reflective summary of the project. The reflective component must be an individual effort.

The capstone project should not be part of a project for another course. You may complete the project individually or as part of a team of your own choosing. If you work as a team, each individual must be responsible for well-specified components of the project. Generally teams should consist of no more than three people. Proposals and milestones may be submitted as a team, but you must submit reflective summaries individually.

Here are some project ideas.

Project Schedule and Deliverables

In addition to specifying a concrete goal, the project proposal should include a detailed schedule of deliverables and milestones. A milestone consists of what you have planned to complete by its date. Goals for milestones will vary depending on the project. However, a typical project will have data collection completed by milestone 1, data analysis completed by milestone 2 and revisions completed for the project presentation. A rubric for reviewing the proposal will be available with the D2L dropbox.
