Assignment 1
Interaction Analysis
Due Saturday April 20 before 11:30pm

Overview

For this assignment, you will analyze the context of use and the interaction design for an authentic artifact of your choosing.

Choosing your artifact

Required qualities:

  • Authentic
  • Sufficiently complex
  • Representative

We will discuss how to apply these qualities to identify a good interactive artifact of this assignment.

Presentation of context and design

With your chosen artifact and context, present the following:

  • Overall description
  • User goals that it addresses (may be a relevant subset of all possible goals)
  • Context of use, including likely Control Mode (from Heckhausen and Beckmann)
  • Overview of interaction design and how it addresses the goal

You may present these points using any variety of text, figures, diagrams and wireframes. Abstract presentations of the interaction are encouraged over actual screenshots.

Analysis

Review the design and discuss how well it addresses criteria for an effective interaction design. You may consider these qualities:

  • Likelihood that a user will know the correct sequence of actions to obtain goal(s)
  • Likelihood that the users will successfully execute actions (assuming correct intentions)
  • Efficiency assuming a correct sequence of actions

When conducting analysis, draw upon the Slip categorization by Heckhausen and Beckmann when discussing likely errors.

Submission

The submitted document should use a common presentation format, ideally PDF. Submit the document through D2L.

Grading

This project will be reviewed using the following criteria:

  • Ease of review. The document is organized and content presented to faciliate review of the above criteria.
  • Completeness. Documentation and diagrams should cover all required elements.
  • Analysis. Effectively draws upon theories, principles or explanations of how the design addresses the user goals.
