Preliminary Team Project
Task, Context and Conceptual Designs
Due Saturday June 1 before 11:30pm

Overview

For this preliminary team project, you will identify an artifact that you will ultimately redesign. For the preliminary phase, your team will finalize the task and context, before working out candidate conceptual designs covering a range of modalities.

Task and Context

Drawing on the chosen artifact and task from assignment 1, your team will finalize a task and context of use for which you will ultimately produce a new design. For this project, only one context of use is required, although we will eventually discuss other contexts too.

Requirement: the chosen artifact must not be based upon the artifact submitted by any of your team members. Before you proceed, contact the author of artifact report (non-team member) for permission to use task and context.

Conceptual Designs with Modality Options

Working individually, each team member will work out at least one conceptual design with a chosen style of interaction and/or modality (e.g. voice-activated, command-based, gesture-operated, plus traditional window-based, tablet-based or mobile interface). The goal is to explore possibilities. Conceptual designs will generally include flowcharts.

As appropriate, consolidate conceptual designs, removing duplicate approaches. Provide a summary of each approach and provide some analysis on their viability and effectiveness.

Report Contents

Your submitted report should contain the following sections:

  • Executive summary. Develop a one to two paragraph statement that summarizes the conceptual designs and highlights the most plausible approaches.
  • Context overview. Summarize the task and intended context of use. If short, persona and scenario information can be presented here. Detailed accounts can be placed in the appendix.
  • Summary of conceptual designs. List summarized accounts of the conceptual designs.
  • Appendix materials. Appendix may include team process details, detailed persona and scenario, and full conceptual designs.

Team Process

The following is a recommended set of team phases and deadlines:

  • Task and Context Selection (Tuesday May 14). Identify an artifact from assignment 1 for which your team plans a redesign.
  • Finalize Task and Context (Saturday May 18). Create a shared document that describes the finalized task and context of use.
  • Individual conceptual design. (Saturday May 25). Individually develop and share conceptual designs with group.
  • Consolidation of conceptual designs (Tuesday May 28). Consolidate a list of summary conceptual designs.
  • Finalize report (Saturday June 1). Write executive summary. Edit and proofread. Submit!

Submission

Submit your report to D2L as a PDF document.

Grading

The following criteria will be used for scoring the report:

  • Report organization and presentation. The report is well written and organized so that it is easy to find required information.
  • Report completeness. The report has all required contents. You are strongly encouraged to review all requirements on this page before you submit your report.
  • Coverage. The conceptual designs address the task and context of use. They represent a variety of modalities and/or styles of interaction.
