Exercise on Control Modes

Heckhausen and Beckmann write about two modes of control. Generally, one mode is more associated with novice behavior and the other more with expert (or practiced) behavior. For each of the opposing descriptors below, indicate which ones are mostly associated with novice or expert control. For example, is fast processing more associated with novice or expert behavior?

  • Slow vs. Fast
  • Forward chaining (choosing action based on previous action/effects) vs. Backward-chaining (consider goal and choose subgoals/actions that achieve them)
  • Focussed narrow goal span vs. Wide-goal span
  • Closed loop (synchronous) feedback vs. open loop (asynchronous) feedback
  • Unconsious vs. conscious
  • Supports multi-tasking vs. difficult multi-tasking
  • Automatic vs. deliberate
