Feedback
Addressed in Saffer, chapter 4
Saffer's principles
- Do not overburden users with feedback.
- The best feedback is never arbitrary. (it always carries a deliberate message)
- Convey the most with the least
- Use the overlooked as a means of message delivery. (use existing controls and displays)
Design choices
- Modality (audio, visual, haptic)
- Duration
- Intensity
- Repetition
- Uncanny valley
- Earcons
Samples
- Limit of perceived levels of haptic feedback
Additional guidelines
- Explain errors; indicate how to fix them
- Consider location of user's locus of attention
- Consider context of feedback and adjust accordingly
Discussion questions
- When is audio feedback appropriate? Use words or earcons?
- Use recorded actors or text-to-speach?
- When is haptic feedback appropriate?
