Factors are dimensions that are relevant to the design that you cannot control. Good user research should specify these dimensions.

Some candidates:

  • User knowledge of the domain
  • User experience with similar technologies
  • Novice user, repeat user, practiced user
  • Context of use (e.g. mobile, screen, information on hand)
  • Goal type (e.g. productivity, service, learning, entertainment)

Dimensions of the Design Space

These dimensions illustrate the space of design possibilities

  • Interaction style (e.g. command-based, direct manipulation, menu selection, form completion, wizard)
  • Modality (e.g. visual, auditory, physical)
  • Machine-inferred selections
